Pubs, shortened for “public house,” are bars that are open to the public. Originating in the cultures of Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, these drinking establishments have immigrated to the United States, especially in areas like Boston, South Detroit, and other New England areas.
A place full of lively people looking to have a good time, pubs offer good company, great music, better ale, and the best food, ranging from fish and chips to beef sandwiches to cheese and grits to classic shepherd’s pie.
Shepherds pie is a typical Irish dish, and getting the pub flavors of shepherd’s pie at home can be done with the right recipe and the right ingredients. With fresh ground beef, perfect potatoes, and Sargento cheese, you can have the classic flavors of Irish pub food anytime you want.
Here is a step-by-step instruction list:
-Large skillet pan—a skillet pan has angled sides that make it easier for cooks to brown meat or stir-fry vegetables quickly.
-Slotted spoon—a slotted spoon makes it much easier to drain meat or veggies out of their liquid.
-10-inch deep-dish pie plate or quiche pan—this size and depth allows for the perfect medley of flavors.
To make a pie that serves 6, you will need these fresh ingredients:
1 lb. ground beef or turkey
½ cup chopped onion
1 package (10 oz) frozen mixed veggies, thawed
1 jar (12 oz) beef gravy
1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
2 cups (8 oz) Sargento Fine Shredded Mild Cheddar Cheese, divided
2½ cups (1½ lbs.) refrigerated garlic mashed potatoes, or leftover mashed potatoes
These ingredients are basic, easy to work with, and are usually already in most people’s refrigerators, which makes this dish a snap to whip up.
A quick kitchen tip: when making this dish, having all of the necessary ingredients and kitchen tools already out on the counter will cause the cooking process to go smoothly.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. You want to preheat first so that the oven is ready to go as soon as you are done putting together all the other ingredients.
Over medium heat, brown the ground beef or turkey with the diced onions in a large skillet. Stir the mixture to ensure the meat and onions get browned on all sides. Once the mix is completely cooked through, use a slotted spoon to drain the liquid out of the skillet. Add in vegetables, gravy, and thyme, and cook the mixture for an additional 4 minutes, or until the filling has been heated through. At this point, remove the skillet from the heat and stir in 1 cup of cheddar cheese.
In your 10-inch pie plate, spoon in meat mixture. Combine ¾ cup of cheddar cheese with the mashed potatoes, and spread the mixture on top of the meat. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Sprinkle remaining ¼ cup of cheese, and bake 5 more minutes.
